A New Era for Our Scholars
The transformation we champion at Action in Africa doesn't end with our Primary Partnership or Secondary Scholarship programs. We are committed to walking with our students all the way through university. Before they step onto campus, our scholars participate in our Annual Internship Program, a vital mentorship period designed to prepare them for the unique challenges of university life. At AIA, we believe graduation is not the destination, but a doorway.
Our mission is to turn academic success into a lifelong career, and this internship is the bridge that makes it possible. Traditionally, we have mentored a cohort of five or six exceptional leaders, however, 2026 marks a historic milestone. Driven by the extraordinary talent of our latest chosen ones, our Family of Five has expanded. We are thrilled to welcome seven interns into the AIA 2026 Cohort.
The growth of our internship program is a direct testament to the success of our scholarship program. As our students continue to excel in their Senior Six exams, the need for high-level professional mentorship increases. These seven interns are more than just students. They are the beacons of hope for their families and neighborhoods, the lighting candles whose success will illuminate the path for everyone coming up behind them.
This year’s cohort truly reflects the diversity of ambition fostered at the Center. Our interns are a group of future surgeons, social workers, ICT professionals, procurement experts, and civil engineers. During their time with us, they aren't just working, they are undergoing an intensive growth period. We are providing them with hands-on experience in professionalism and workplace ethics, leadership, and community advocacy. Furthermore, they are mastering essential life skills such as financial literacy, public speaking, strategic goal setting, and ICT proficiency, ensuring they are fully prepared for the challenges of university life. “ I am now fully committed to my path toward a career in Medicine and Surgery, a dream made possible by AIA’s intervention. I had to drop out in Primary six due to financial problems at home, but see how far I have reached, I can't believe that I am joining University soon ”. Witness shared.
Most of our interns, especially Mugisha Witness and Shaban Magezi, there was a time when even finishing Senior Four felt like a distant dream, but they have exceeded their expectations due to our efforts. By expanding our internship slots, we are ensuring that more students have the support they need to transition from the classroom to the university lecture hall and, eventually, to the professional world. “I had sat at home for over one year without studying, trust me, I had lost hope, my goals, ambitions, and prospects were sabotaged due to financial constraints, but now on my way to join campus after the internship at the Center’’. Shaban revealed.
For the parents of these interns, many of whom are casual laborers or small-scale entrepreneurs running local restaurants, this selection was a moment of pure joy. Coming from low-income backgrounds where every day is a struggle, seeing their children chosen for this program brought a profound sense of pride and relief. It represents the moment their sacrifices finally began to bear fruit. “My mother and I would often wait for customers until 2:00 AM’’. Witness shared.
To our seven new interns. We see your future. We have watched you pursue your education by the dim lamps, refusing to let the darkness of your circumstances dim the brightness of your dreams and persevere through financial hardships. Now, we are honored to watch you take your first steps as professionals.
As AIA, our core mission remains unshaken. To cultivate the minds and spirits of the next generation. We are more than an organization, we are a community that believes your background should never limit your potential. This year, we aren't just celebrating a bigger number but celebrating the resilience of seven families and the limitless potential of seven future leaders.
And in the mindset of the students we serve. We remain steadfast in our commitment to nurturing the leaders of tomorrow, ensuring that every scholar has the mentorship they need to thrive. As these seven interns prepare to take on the world, we stand behind them with pride, knowing that their success is our greatest legacy. Therefore, your long-term support has been instrumental in elevating and transforming the vulnerable families in Nakuwadde.
