When a Spelling Bee is More than Competition
The Action in Africa Primary Partnership Program (PPP) has served as a catalyst for students’ excellence over the past ten years by hosting multidisciplinary competitions that extend far beyond the classroom. By bridging academics with creative and cultural expression, we provide a holistic platform for our partner schools to shine. While past events have showcased incredible talent in drama, speech reading, music, sports, and cultural exhibitions, our most recent milestone took place on April 17th, as we gathered for the highly anticipated Spelling Bee.
The Center experienced vibrant energy. The place was filled with the students' mental discipline, and the silence was only broken by the confident voices of the young competitors. The event was dedicated to fostering literacy, confidence, and friendly rivalry among our partner schools. Five exceptional schools brought their sharpest minds to the center to face their agemates, and each student was eager to prove their linguistic power. The participating schools included: Africa Junior School, Lady Jane Memorial Primary School, Vision Foundation, Strathearn Primary, and Little Kings Learning Centre.
The competition was tight. From complex vocabulary to tricky silent letters, the students navigated round after round of challenging phrases. It was inspiring to see young learners stand tall on the stage, facing a crowd and a panel of judges from the Enjuba organisation. Tr. Hanat of Vision Foundation School noted that the competition has been instrumental in helping students master word meanings and accurately differentiate among complex terms presented during the rounds.
Beyond just spelling, the event provided a platform where students from various backgrounds can come together, challenge themselves, and celebrate academic achievement.
“The Spelling Bee has done far more than introduce our students to new vocabulary. It has also empowered them to become critical problem-solvers and significantly boosted their self-esteem, giving them the courage to stand confidently before large gatherings of their peers,” shared Tr. Deborah of Lady Jane Memorial Primary School.
While every participant displayed incredible talent, one school rose to the top through active precision and consistency. We are proud to crown Little Kings Learning Centre as the Overall Champions of the 2026 Spelling Bee. Their students demonstrated exceptional preparation and a deep mastery of the English language.
"I am Mugabi Elisha from Little Kings Learning Centre. Today’s competition challenged me with words I had never encountered before, like 'stalwart.' It was a tough but rewarding experience, and I can truly say that word is now permanently etched in my mind. Beyond the academic challenge, I have also gained the confidence to stand before an audience of over 500 students, teachers, and judges. I have managed to spell my words correctly under that pressure, and I am so proud that my school is taking the trophy as the winning school in the spelling bee."
Events like these are more than just competitions. They are building blocks for a lifetime of learning. By encouraging students to master language, we are giving them the tools to communicate effectively, think critically, and succeed in their future academic endeavors.
We want to extend a massive appreciation to all the participants, teachers, and school heads who made this day a success. Your commitment to education is what makes our mission and vision thrive.
