Opening Doors to Higher Education
According to a Daily Monitor article published on March 17, 2026, the Uganda National Examinations Board (UNEB) records approximately 165,000 Ugandans graduate each year, many of whom aspire to pursue higher education.
Yet fewer than 10% go on to university, largely due to financial barriers. With tuition at some private institutions reaching 7 million UGX ($1,600 USD) per semester, access to higher education is often determined by financial circumstances rather than academic ability. Talented, qualified students are left without opportunities to reach their full potential.
Action in Africa (AIA) is working to change that by helping ensure financial barriers do not prevent deserving students from pursuing their educational goals.
At Action in Africa, education creates pathways from potential to impact. For years, our university scholarship program has provided full scholarships to exceptional students, helping them continue their education and prepare for meaningful careers. As our community programs expand and student engagement grows, so does our capacity to invest in the next generation of leaders. Today, we support 23 university students pursuing a range of degrees, and we celebrate 19 graduates, demonstrating the program's growth and lasting impact in the Nakuwadde community.
In 2025, we expanded our university scholarship intake to six students. In 2026, we grew further, welcoming seven new scholars into the program. This progress reflects the momentum of our community programs and our continued commitment to expanding access to higher education for talented local youth. We look forward to seeing how the program will grow in the years ahead.
A Transparent, Merit-Based Selection Process
Our university scholarship selection criteria recognize academic achievement, sustained effort, and community participation. To qualify for a fully funded scholarship, students must first graduate from AIA's Secondary Scholarship Program at one of our partner secondary schools. They must also demonstrate consistent engagement by earning the required attendance points through regular participation in Center activities, particularly during school holidays.
Applicants must achieve a minimum of 10 points in the Science category or 12 points in the Arts category on their Senior Six examinations. Selection is based on academic results and program attendance scores, providing a transparent process in which eligible students are evaluated against consistent criteria.
Preparing Scholars for Success
Earning a university scholarship is just the beginning. Before starting university, each selected scholar completes an intensive four-month internship at the Center.
The internship equips scholars with personal, academic, and professional skills that prepare them for university and future careers. Through hands-on instruction, students develop skills in report writing, minute-taking, project management, research, personal branding, information and communications technology (ICT), and financial literacy.
Scholars also learn social and professional etiquette, receive structured mentorship from AIA staff and external experts, and participate in reading sessions that encourage critical thinking and lifelong learning.
Practical leadership experience is another key component of the program. Scholars help facilitate the Center's daily After-School Program, Primary Partnership Program, and seasonal holiday activities, giving them opportunities to apply their skills while contributing to the community that helped them succeed.
Support from Enrollment to Graduation
Choosing a degree is a significant decision that can shape a student's future. During their internship, scholars participate in structured career guidance sessions with AIA staff and external professionals. These conversations help students identify fields of study that align with their strengths, interests, career aspirations, and long-term goals for contributing to their communities.
Once scholars choose a degree program and gain admission to a public or private university, Action in Africa provides comprehensive support throughout their university journey.
Our scholarship program covers 100% of tuition and required university fees and provides each scholar with a personal laptop for research and coursework. Students also receive a monthly living allowance to help cover housing, meals, and academic materials. Ongoing mentorship and academic guidance from the AIA team help scholars navigate university life, stay focused on their studies, and work toward graduation.
This comprehensive support allows students to concentrate on their education while building the skills and confidence they need to pursue their chosen careers.
Your Support Opens Doors
None of this growth would be possible without the generosity and commitment of our donor community. Expanding our annual university scholarship intake from five students to seven reflects your investment in the potential of young people in Nakuwadde.
Your support helps turn ambition into opportunity, ensuring that financial barriers do not stand in the way of talented students pursuing higher education. Thank you for believing in our scholars and walking alongside them on their journeys to university and beyond.
Together, we are helping prepare the next generation of doctors, engineers, social workers, finance professionals, and community leaders who will shape Uganda's future. Every scholarship represents more than access to a degree. It represents an opportunity for a student to build a future, support their family, and contribute to their community for years to come.
