Stepping away from day-to-day operations through a staff retreat is essential for every organization to recharge, reflect, and refocus. From October 15th to 16th, our team gathered at the Alison Hotel in Jinja for our annual All-Staff Retreat, a transformative two-day getaway dedicated to reflection, strategic alignment, and team unity. With Jinja's serene backdrop, the retreat offered a well-deserved break from our daily routine, allowing us to step back, reconnect, and align on our long-term vision.
The retreat opened with reflection sessions to review our achievements, identify growth opportunities, and map out strategic goals for the coming months and years. Stepping out of our typical office environment gave everyone the space to participate in open, transparent discussions about our collective vision and shared goals.
At the heart of this year’s retreat was a deep reflection on our identity and purpose as we revisited our mission and vision to reaffirm the principles that guide our everyday decisions. We recommitted to teamwork by harnessing our collective strength across all programs, inclusion by ensuring every voice is heard and valued, accountability through transparent stewardship, creativity to pioneer innovative solutions to complex social challenges, and integrity by operating with total honesty and unwavering ethics in every community we reach.
A key highlight of our time in Jinja was refocusing on our Five-Year Strategic Plan, a comprehensive blueprint for breaking the cycle of generational poverty. Moving forward, our mission centers on four core pillars: expanding quality education so young minds can thrive, offering vocational training that builds practical self-reliance, opening doors to employment opportunities through careers and entrepreneurship, and promoting better health to ensure lasting community wellness, particularly the importance of meeting deadlines and completing tasks on time based on most important.

I had the privilege of visiting three wonderful hotels in Jinja: Allison Hotel, Source of the Nile Suites, and Signature Hotel. Entering the retreat with plenty of curiosity, I found the experience to be truly exceptional. I learned that Action in Africa updates its mission every five years, and I gained key insights into professional growth, particularly the importance of meeting deadlines and completing tasks on time. The team-building activities really showed how warm, open, and supportive the AIA team is. Words cannot express how grateful I am for this experience. Special thanks to Aunt Sarah, the organizing committee, and the entire AIA team for making it so memorable!.

Joining Action in Africa as a fellow marked a major career milestone, highlighted by an unforgettable staff retreat in Jinja, Uganda. Beyond the great food, hotel stays, and engaging sessions on professional growth, workplace dynamics, and core values, the true highlight was the warm and welcoming culture. Connecting deeply with colleagues and experiencing this strong sense of community reaffirmed the fellow's passion for Human Resource Management and proved that great people are the heart of every great organization.

The retreat highlighted the power of sharing knowledge and creating opportunities for positive, meaningful change. I was reminded that collaboration, teamwork, and mutual support are vital to achieving our shared goals. Most importantly, it reinforced that each of us plays a key role in uplifting others, fostering unity, and building sustainable solutions that break generational barriers and empower future success.
Beyond strategic discussions, our two days at Alison Hotel strengthened our team's interpersonal bonds through interactive exercises, cross-departmental alignment, and shared downtime in Jinja's relaxing atmosphere. By bringing staff together from every department to share insights, participate in engaging team-building activities focused on trust and problem-solving, and connect over shared meals, we fostered genuine relationships and unified our cross-functional initiatives far beyond the structured meeting room.
We returned from Jinja fully aligned, energized, and ready to turn our vision into tangible outcomes. A heartfelt thank you to the management and staff at Alison Hotel for their hospitality, and to our entire team for bringing such passion and dedication to every session.
Together, we are ready to drive our strategic plan forward and continue transforming lives in the community of Nakuwadde.
