A Simple Meal Transform Lives

“During my creative classes, I often find myself wondering what today’s snack will be. I start guessing, will it be eggs, my favorite, or maybe chapati? Because I haven’t eaten since the morning, the anticipation grows,” said 12-year-old Faith Muwanguzi. “When the snacks finally arrive, my heart becomes excited. I am so grateful to Action in Africa; these snacks mean the world to me when my stomach is empty.”

For Faith and many of her peers, the magic of our After School Program doesn't end with classes; it reaches its peak when the snacks are served. What might look like a simple treat to an outsider is, for these children, a moment of pure joy that fuels their spirits and makes their time with us truly unforgettable.

A Menu of Care and Dignity

To provide a holistic experience, our team introduced a rotating snack menu designed to be both nutritious and exciting. Throughout the week, children enjoy a variety of local favorites, including:

  • Fresh eggs and seasonal watermelon

  • Sweet yellow bananas

  • Freshly made Mandaazi

  • Delicious local chapati

This small gesture makes our students feel seen and deeply valued. However, the reality behind the program is often bittersweet. "Watching the children yearn for the snacks as we serve them is a bittersweet experience. It is clear proof that many start their school day on an empty stomach. While it is heartbreaking to see such hunger, it is a powerful reminder that these snacks aren't just a treat, they are a lifeline." Harriet “Mama” Babirye said.

The children depart The Center carrying more than just new knowledge; they head home or back to school with nourished bodies. For many, nutritional support is a matter of health. Nabulya Emilly, 10 years old, a primary seven student at Strathearn, explains: "These snacks help me manage my ulcers by keeping my stomach from being empty. The fact that they are free is a huge blessing. Thank you for looking after our health and our hearts."

Nourishing children during school

We believe that a hungry mind cannot reach its full potential. A story reported by the Daily Monitor on 2nd November 2020 by Ismail Musa Ladu showed that 70% of local children go hungry at school. For average students, food insecurity is a daily reality. In Ugandan households where securing a midday meal often means sleeping without supper, the porridge and snacks we provide fill a critical gap that would otherwise be left empty.

We are committed to feeding our students twice a day, year-round. Whether they are attending our Holiday Programs, joining us for After-School sessions, or studying at our partner institutions, we ensure no child goes hungry. Through our Primary Partnership Program (PPP), we extend this lifeline directly into local schools, providing essential nutrition to combat the exhaustion of students who often travel long distances on empty stomachs. Our school-based support includes whey and soya bean fortified porridge, fresh fruits, and milk.

Your partnership has been the driving force behind this mission to eradicate hunger in the Nakuwadde community. While the cost of these items may seem small, their impact is life-changing in a region where many families still face the reality of going to bed on an empty stomach.

The Power of Your Change

To provide perspective on how far your contribution goes, here is a breakdown of our essential supplies:

  • 1 cup of Fortified Porridge: 1,000 UGX (less than $0.27 USD)

  • 1 Fresh Banana: 300 UGX ($0.081 USD)

Our Impact in 2025

These small amounts add up to a massive safety net for the hundreds of students, teachers, and families that attend programs at The Center. Thanks to your generosity, this past year we were able to serve 135,343 cups of warm, nutritious porridge.

What might look like a simple purchase to some is a vital lifeline to the families of Uganda. By supporting these costs, you are ensuring that hunger is no longer a barrier to a child’s education or dignity. Together, we are turning these small coins into a future full of health and hope.

Since launching our Nutrition Program, the transformation within the Nakuwadde community has been profound. We have seen a clear rise in school attendance, sharper concentration in the classroom, and a palpable sense of joy that wasn't there before.

This progress is a direct result of the unwavering support from our donors and partners. When you give to Action in Africa, your contribution transcends the physical; you aren’t just buying a bag of porridge or a liter of milk; you are investing in the dignity, health, and potential of a child. Together, we are ensuring that every student is energized, nourished, and ready to succeed.

Join us in nourishing the leaders of tomorrow.
