Conserving The Environment: Action in Africa Celebrates Earth Day with a Tree-Planting Campaign
Earth Day began in 1970 when U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson, inspired by the passion of student anti-war protests, sought to channel that same energy into a national movement for the environment. His vision was so powerful that it successfully pushed environmental protection onto the global political agenda, transforming a single day of American activism into a worldwide celebration.
This April, as the world turns its attention to the preservation and conservation of our planet, Action in Africa (AIA) is taking the lead to sustain the environment. In honor of Earth Day, we launched a community-driven tree campaign that bridges our past and the promise of our future. To mark this global event, our AIA staff, program participants, and beloved alumni came together with a shared goal to “green” our new Sentema campus.
Through a dedicated contribution of 50,000 Ugandan Shillings ($14 USD) per tree, our team and alumni have personally invested in the environmental health of our new home. These aren't just saplings, they are symbols of our long-term commitment to the community. On April 16th, we planted these trees on the eight-acre Sentema campus, creating a natural canopy that will provide food, shade, clean air, and beauty for generations to come.
The Sentema Tree Campaign prioritizes long-term sustainability by preventing soil erosion and naturally cooling our new buildings to counter the 'heat island' effect. Beyond the environment, we are revitalizing local air quality and crafting green spaces that serve as a health sanctuary for our children and the elderly. By inviting our staff, alumni, and local community to get involved, we are fostering a deep sense of shared ownership, ensuring every supporter has a living, breathing connection to Sentema’s growth.
The campaign sparked deep conversations across our people. Here is why our community felt compelled to participate in the campaign.
Rebecca Nakijjoba, Operations Manager
I am donating this tree as a long-term investment in the growth, well-being, and sustainability of our community center in Sentema. Beyond its environmental value, the tree represents resilience, continuity, and shared responsibility. It will provide shade, improve the surrounding environment, and stand as a living symbol of our collective commitment to nurturing a healthier, stronger, and more connected community for generations to come.
Sandra Nansubuga, Scholarship Manager
My commitment to the environment is deeply personal. My grandparents relied on agriculture, which laid the foundation for my mother’s education and a good job, hence paving the way for my own opportunities. That built a deep, personal commitment to environmental conservation. Having witnessed how agriculture shaped my family’s journey, I am now dedicating my work to mentoring young girls through the Sauti Ya Dada program to protect the environment.
In our curriculum, we explore the critical link between climate change and girl-child education. Today, I lead sessions for girls on how climate change directly threatens their access to education. My goal is to be both an educator and an active climate change advocate, proving that individual action can lead to global conservation. For me, donating to this cause isn't just an act of charity, it’s a necessary step in my own journey to protect the environment that once provided everything for my family.
I am taking my advocacy a step further by actively contributing to conservation efforts, bridging the gap between my heritage in agriculture and my passion for a sustainable future for the next generation of girls. That is why I participated in the campaign.
Aisha Nabbosa, Operations Aide
I contributed a tree to Sentema because I am passionate about protecting nature and the oxygen it provides for our lives.
Rehema Nansereko, Special Needs Aide
I contributed a tree because I want to see Sentema covered in plenty of shade for years to come.
Gloria Nabulime, Education Programs Assistant and Alumni
I have donated a tree to promote cleaner air and environmental conservation, while also demonstrating to the younger generation the power of collective effort.
Paddy Kimbowa, Construction Expansion Coordinator and Alumni
I started the Tree donation campaign among our staff because I wanted to create something that brings us together around a common cause or goal. Tree planting gives an inclusion purpose, which is one of our goals that represents growth, resilience and a healthier future for our community.
By donating a tree as a team, we're building a culture of responsibility and pride in selflessness to something bigger than ourselves.
Nakidde Mary, Alumni
I donated a tree to the Action In Africa Center because trees provide oxygen for good health, a shade for outdoor meetings and also create beautiful scenery. So it gives me joy to take part in this creation.
Earth Day reminds us that we aren't just living on this planet, we are part of it. Every breath we take and every drop of water we drink is a gift from a complex, delicate system that requires our stewardship. By protecting our environment, we are quite literally protecting our future, our health, and our legacy. Let’s treat every day like April 22nd, honoring the only home we have ever known with the respect and care it deserves.
