ShadiaH Nakayaga, Scholarship Assistant

Shadiah Nakayaga’s journey with Action in Africa began in 2016, when financial challenges threatened to cut short her secondary education. When her mother learned about Action in Africa’s scholarships in Nakuwadde, Shadiah was awarded support to complete both her O-Level and A-Level studies. With AIA’s continued backing, she went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in International Relations and Diplomatic Studies from Kampala International University in 2023, graduating with first-class honors.

Reflecting on her path, she shared: “The past is deep, but I am glad of who Action in Africa has made me.”

As a student, Shadiah immersed herself in AIA’s programs, finding confidence and belonging through debate, drama, traditional dance, and counseling sessions with the AIA “mamas.” She credits these experiences with strengthening her public speaking, teamwork, and research skills—opportunities her schools had not provided. “Through these programs I could make the audience listen to my voice,” she said. Her passion for debate made her one of The Center’s most recognized speakers, and her internship with AIA remains one of her favorite memories: “I loved how I could play with the kids, serve them porridge, make them feel loved, and laugh out loud when they did funny things.”

After completing a one-year fellowship in 2024, Shadiah joined AIA’s staff as a Scholarship Assistant. In this role, she supports students and families throughout the scholarship process by assisting with applications, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring beneficiaries receive support in a welcoming environment. She also works closely with parents, whom she sees as vital partners in students’ success.

Looking to the future, Shadiah hopes to build a successful managerial career, continue supporting young people to recognize their worth, and inspire her own children to strive for excellence. Above all, she carries a deep sense of gratitude for AIA: “How far they have supported me melts my heart every time I think of how my life would be if I had stopped my education journey in Senior Four. It’s AIA that made me, and I will live to make their legacy live forever.”
