Adult English Students Tackle English Exams
Last month, 20 Adult English Program participants took their exams. Three intermediate, two advanced, and 15 beginners cam to The Center for the test. Many of these students joined the program unable to write their own names, but now, they’re confidently writing, reading, and speaking English like pros.
Our program includes not only Ugandans but also refugees from Congo, who are incredibly grateful for the education. Many of the refugees only knew Kiswahili and French, languages that are rarely used in Uganda, so learning English has been essential for effective communication.
For up to 12 hours a week, adult learners come to the Center for Adult English classes with Teacher Judith. These classes are designed to empower adults in the community with essential English reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills for effective communication in both personal and professional settings.
Currently, English is vital for everyone worldwide in order to achieve effective communication. However, for individuals who are illiterate, it becomes difficult to understand and engage in collaboration with others. In Uganda, people may cause a non-English speaker to feel embarrassed for their lack of understanding, inspiring Action in Africa to introduce the Adult English Program to promote inclusivity among the people of Nakuwadde who missed out on education in their early years.
At the end of the year, this group of adult learners will take promotional exams, which will determine whether they advance to the next level based on their performance.
